How lookups are computed

DLS positions are computed from roughly 21,000 townships of surveyed corner coordinates published by the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and British Columbia, warped over the theoretical Dominion Land Survey grid. BC NTS/BCGS positions are exact graticule math from the provincial grid regulation. Typical accuracy is within tens of metres — good for navigation and reference, not a legal survey.

Surveyed fabric, not just formulas

The DLS grid is often treated as pure geometry: townships six miles square, 36 sections, meridians every four degrees of longitude. Real townships are not that tidy. The original surveys were run with chains and transits across roughly 200 million acres, and the monuments on the ground — which legally define every parcel — drift from the ideal grid by anywhere from a few metres to a few hundred. Pure DLS math typically lands 50–200 m from the true position.

This site closes that gap the way McKercher and Wolfe describe in their standard reference on the western survey system: anchor the theoretical grid to the surveyed fabric. Each provincial dataset publishes coordinates for surveyed township corners — about 21,000 townships across the four provinces. A lookup first computes the parcel's position inside its ideal township, then bilinearly warps that position through the township's surveyed corner coordinates, stretching and shearing the perfect square to fit where the survey actually put it.

Worked example: 19-17-26-W2

  1. Parse the description: section 19, township 17, range 26, west of the 2nd Meridian (approximately 102°W).
  2. Find township 17-26-W2 in the SaskGrid-derived fabric and load its surveyed corner coordinates.
  3. Locate section 19 inside the theoretical 6×6-mile township (west edge, fourth row up), then warp that position through the surveyed corners.
  4. Result: 50.447879, -105.568995 — just outside Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, typically within tens of metres of the monumented section.

Where a township was never surveyed or its fabric is clipped by water, the tool falls back to the theoretical projection and flags the result. See coverage and limitations for where that applies.

NTS and BCGS: exact graticule math

British Columbia's NTS/BCGS locations work differently: the grid is defined directly in latitude and longitude, so no survey fabric is needed. This site computes each quarter unit, unit, block and sheet exactly as laid out in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Grid Regulation (B.C. Reg. 536/2004) — a primary quad of 8° longitude by 4° latitude, subdivided down to quarter units of 22.5 by 15 seconds. For example, d-96-H/94-A-15 resolves to 56.914583, -120.565625 in the Peejay field northeast of Fort St. John.

One caveat: the regulation defines an ideal graticule, but the officially published NAD83 grid corners can differ from it by up to roughly 100 m in northeast BC. For well-site precision, confirm against the official corner listings.
